Coal Mines Historic Site

The Coal Mines Historic Site is part of the Australian Convict Sites World Heritage Property and helps show what life was like for early settlers and convicts.

Accommodating around 600 prisoners, jailers and families, the site is fairly spread out with paths and interpretive signage showing the ruins of officers quarters, barracks, offices, cells and views of the surrounding area.

There is a wide range of flora and fauna on the site including pademelons, wallabies, wombats, echidnas, various bird life and 350 species of plants including rare orchids and fungi.

Entry is free and walking options vary from a few minutes to several hours.
